例えば、次の一節のように、それぞれの兵士が戦地で負傷した状況について淡々と記す。
Dan was mobilized and deployed to Iraq in 2004. That November, an IED detonated under his vehicle, taking Dan’s left leg, severely injuring his right, and giving him a traumatic brain injury. In the months that followed, Dan’s doctors at Walter Reed did everything they could to save his right leg. “My surgical team was amazing,” he says. Unfortunately, after more than thirty operations and a recurring bone infection, Dan was faced with his next challenge: adjusting to life as a double amputee.

BJというニックネームで呼ぶ兵士の場合はこうだ。
In 2004, he was activated and sent to the Al Anbar province of Iraq. On Thanksgiving night that year, BJ’s Humvee was blasted by a roadside bomb, killing one man and severely injuring three others. BJ’s legs were badly damaged, and his left leg was eventually amputated. His left eye is scarred and his ears still ring.

女性兵士や移民も登場
本書に登場する兵士の多くは腕や脚を失っている。あるいは精神的な疾患を抱える兵士も出てくる。しかし、不屈の精神で新たな環境に適応し明るい日常を取り戻していく。とにかく、肉体に大きな障害が残っても前向きに努力を続けていく。例えば、別の元兵士の次のケースのように。
